Days of Caring

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania

For the past 15 years, United Way has brought together thousands of volunteers from both the community and area companies with local community agencies to complete hundreds of projects that benefit our region in a two-day celebration of community impact called Days of Caring.

Days of Caring have been a special service project event that builds partnerships between United Way, nonprofit agencies, community volunteers, and employees from area workplaces. Each year, members of United Way’s network of agencies and other participating organizations design inspiring hands-on projects for corporate volunteers.

The 16th annual Days of Caring will take place on Saturday, September 15, 2007 and Wednesday, September 19, 2007. This year, we will emphasize building bridges between corporate and community groups by increasing the number of community volunteers involved in Days of Caring. By developing innovative and valuable service projects, your organization can help us to strengthen the value of volunteerism for both corporate and community volunteers while taking advantage of this wonderful volunteer power.

A Little History of The PA Home of the Sparrow:
The Pennsylvania Home of the Sparrow was incorporated in May 1994. It opened its first residence in February 1995.The first two residences were rented from area churches. In May 1997 the Board of Directors purchased a house in the Borough of West Chester. With the help of over 300 volunteers, this house became home to five families in the agency's Transitional Housing Program in February 1998.

The agency purchased its second house in  West Chester in November 1999. Renovations began in July 2000. Once again, devoted volunteers stepped up to the plate to offer their assistance. In February 2001 this house became a home to an additional four families. Today the agency can provide its program to up to nine families at any given time. Since the opening of its first residence in February 1995, the agency has provided housing and supportive services to more than 150 families, including more than 200 children.

The Need:

The lack of affordable housing in Chester County is a major factor contributing to homelessness. As noted in the Blueprint Report, an individual must earn at least $33,550 per year to afford the fair market rent of $839 per month for a two-bedroom apartment in Chester County.

Female-headed households with children under 18 live below the poverty level in Chester County. Most are unemployed and have minimal education or job training, and are unable to afford housing.

The Solution:

The Home of the Sparrow, through a unique program provides long-term transitional housing, extensive training and support. It also provides a badly needed missing link between emergency housing and permanent housing.

Women who are committed to improving their lives and receive a broad range of social services, including housing, vocational support and counseling, to help them live with dignity and as productive members of society.
